Instagram against Twitter

Surprisingly for many, Facebook has handed Instagram a huge cheque. However, it proved to make sense – apart from data mining, Internet users share photos on Facebook, and Instagram was on the up and up with its automatic shot filtering, which makes a simple iPhone snap look decent. Although Instagram’s popularity soared on Twitter as well, the latter has put a stop to that without explanation. This means that Twitter users won’t be able to properly display the pictures via its site or applications, but instead redirected from tweets to Instagram’s website. This deprives users of the quick view option they have enjoyed from its inception. Apparently, Instagram believes that a picture is worth more than 140 characters, though the company only said that disabling Twitter integration made sense at the moment.

Instagram’s Chief Executive Officer claimed that the situation changes with the company evolving, though it is unclear whether that evolution is linked to the whim of Facebook. Indeed, tensions started to build when Instagram was purchased by Facebook. A result of those tensions was cutting the most important ties, though there were no specifics in the wild just yet.

Since the primary way of the largest social network in the world to monetize is data mining, all three social media services are trying to figure out the best way to profit from the amateur photography. Facebook recently allowed automatic photo tagging, but this was opposed by people who valued their privacy. Although this wasn’t enough to permanently delete their account, they still got unhappy with the social network recognizing them.

The industry observers point out that this feud seems to be specifically between Instagram and Twitter. In the meanwhile, other services, like Tumblr, Foursquare, and even Facebook, will remain unaffected. In response, Twitter might want to introduce its own photo filters, just like the ones offered by Instagram. In this case, Internet users frozen out by the Twitter’s move would be able to continue to enjoy intentionally blurry pictures of their meal, with full integration. We’ll see the result of this move quite soon.
